Michael Pollan relies on the skills of others to make his hunter/gatherer meal. Why is it that we often learn a skill best when someone (an expert in that area) teaches/shows us instead of watching someone on TV or reading a book about it?

I think we learn better when an expert shows us because it's more of a hands on experience, and you will feel more confident because you will be able to ask him/her if you are doing it right. Also you will be able to get tips and secrets of the trade from the expert.
ReplyDeleteWhen you are in the hands of an expert, you ar free to ask difficult questions and have them answered. You can't do this with a book, or a TV. (unless you like talking to TVs, of course)
ReplyDeleteIt would also be more personal and would give the teacher a better chance to correct your mistakes.
I think we learn better because most of us are learners that if we are with the person we learn quicker.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sara. If we actually get to touch and interact with what we are doing, I think that we will understand it better. But, when you read a book, if you don't understand something, it is not like you can simply ask a question. With someone right there you can ask about things you don't understand.
ReplyDeleteI think that we are able to learn better because you are able to have someone there showing you how to do it and you can also ask them if you are doing it right or wrong. When an experet teaches you he/she also knows exactly what they are doing so that you know that you are getting a good lesson and you are being taught the right way to do the task.
ReplyDeleteI think we learn better when we are with the people in person better than we do in TV or books because we can ask questions that we don't know about. You might even get a few tips and secrets they have to make the experiance even better! :)
ReplyDeleteI think we learn better because we have someone who knows what they are doing and can correct our mistakes. Also, if we have any questions,they could answer them.
ReplyDeleteI think it is best that we learn from a expert because in movies and books they usually stretch things, like a one scrape of two sticks makes a big bonfire.

ReplyDelete1) You see what he/ she is doing rather than reading it or seeing it on a two dimensional screen.
2) While you're learning, if you're not doing something right the expert can help you. If you read it or saw it on T.V., you don't know if you're doing something right or wrong.
3) The expert can give you tips or tell you things they wouldn't be able to do on T.V.
