Farmer Salatin and his workers feel that by preserving the chicken's "chickeness" they are working with the animal's natural instincts, not against them. Also, by doing this, he gets the good, natural results of animals working with animals.
Salatin also does this with his other animals such as his cows, who are allowed to eat only when nature is ready. The cows also benefit from the chickens because the chickens helped kill the future flies while getting a meal.
I agree with Tom. It's important for farmer Salatin to honor the chicken's "chickenness" because that's what chickens naturaly do. When chicken's get to be themselves, they produce better.
The cows eat only one part of the big field a day because the grass needes a chance to regrow. Then, the cow gets enough to eat for the day and everyone's happy because, like the chickens, the cows also produce better. That's just how animals work in nature.
By working with the chicken's nature he is able to allow them to play their role in the environment. This helps the land and keeps the grass healthy for the cows to eat again. This also aids the consumer by providing healthier meat.
Farmer Salatin was right to let the chickens have their "chickness". It allows the chickens to eat what they are suppossed to eat. It also helps with their role in the environment. The chickens have better meat and their eggs are better.
